Tinto Pesquera – Alejandro Fernández

Since a couple of months I am working for the winery Tinto Pesquera in the wine region Ribera del Duero. I´m in charge of the visits and the tastings, as well as the contact with tour operators and the development of wine tourism. Since I haven´t written about Tinto Pesquera before, I think it´s about time I do!

ALEJANDRO FERNÁNDEZ

Alejandro Fernández with his beloved Tempranillo grapes

Tinto Pesquera is the first winery of Grupo Pesquera, the wine company of Alejandro Fernández existing of four wineries. Alejandro started his company in 1972, after having worked as a blacksmith and carpenter for several years, but he has been involved in the wine making process from a very young age. Together with his father he elaborated the wines for his whole family in the 16th century winery in Pesquera de Duero, which he later bought to start making the first Tinto Pesquera wines. Now 84 years old, Alejandro still continues working and sharing the love for his wines with everyone he meets.

Besides Tinto Pesquera, Grupo Pesquera consists of Condado de Haza, the 2nd winery in Ribera del Duero, Dehesa la Granja in Zamora and El Vínculo in Castilla la Mancha. Since 2011 the company also has its own hotel, AF Pesquera****, where its guests can also enjoy the delicious Castilian food, paired with the Grupo Pesquera wines.

The guided visit of Tinto Pesquera starts in the shop, where I explain a bit about each winery and its wines and about the history of the company. Then we walk to the old winery, called ´Lagar´, where Alejandro made his wines for 8 years (1975-1982). It is a beautiful place, still in its original state, and in the video shown the working process is explained very clearly.

Of course a visit to the modern installations, including an explanation of the elaboration process of our Tempranillo wines, also forms part of the visit. At the end of the visit we will taste a Tinto Pesquera wine, accompanied by some sheep cheese from Dehesa la Granja.

decantarIf Alejandro isn´t at one of the other wineries, he will also join the tasting and share his stories. It might even happen that he will sing the Pesquera song for you!

We offer visits during the morning from Monday to Saturday. During weekdays we sometimes also offer visits during the afternoon. Sundays the winery is closed.

If you are interested in visiting Tinto Pesquera, please email or call me and I will be happy to receive you!

Muga

Muga1The latest winery I visited has been Muga, an impressive bodega in the heart of Rioja. This family owned business is located in the barrio de la Estación (the train station district), where most of the wineries of Haro, the wine capital of Rioja, can be found. The reason for such a density of wineries is that Continue reading

Interview in the Dutch magazine Espanje!

For the first edition of the Dutch magazine Espanje! I´ve been interviewed to talk about the wine tourism of Grupo Matarromera. It was super exciting to see the magazine in all the book stores. If you are interested in buying the magazine (with many great tips about traveling in Spain, about Spanish food and also to practice your Spanish with some of the articles), the magazine can still be found in the book stores till the end of this week.

If you are interested in a translation of the article, let me know 😉

Vivanco is located just outside Briones and is surrounded by vineyards. Vivanco is not only a winery, but Continue reading

Wine Weekend – Harvest experiences in Rueda, Toro and Cigales

Wondering what would be the best time of the year to do a wine tour in Spain? The answer is simple: in September! Most wineries will be in the middle of the grape harvest, which is one of the most interesting parts of the wine making process. And in Emina Rueda, Cyan and Valdelosfrailes, the wineries where I work, you will be able to experience the harvest yourself!
